Students with a life-threatening allergy must have an Allergy Action Plan, completed by their medical provider and signed by the parent, in the clinic. Middle and high school students may carry their own EpiPen if the medical provider, parent, and school nurse agree that the student is able to respond appropriately and maintain safety.

Students will be excluded from school when they meet the following criteria in accordance with guidelines from the Texas Department of State Health Services:
- Fever > 100.3° F - may return when fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever-
reducing medications- Diarrhea - may return after 24 hours without diarrhea
- Vomiting - may return after 24 hours without vomiting
- Pink eye - may return when symptom free or when released by medical provider
- Strep throat - must be on antibiotic for 24 hours and meet fever criteria

State law requires each student to be fully immunized to be enrolled in public school. The Texas Department of State Health Services outlines these vaccine requirements each year.
To claim an exclusion for reasons of conscience, including a religious belief, the child's parent or legal guardian must provide a completed, signed, and notarized affidavit provided by the state. The affidavit will be valid for two years from the date of notarization. The affidavit may be requested from Texas Health and Human Services. .
A student who has not received the required immunizations for reasons of conscience may be excluded from school in times of emergency or epidemic. (Texas Education Code 38.001)

Head lice, although not an illness or a disease, is very common among children and is spread very easily through head-to-head contact during play, sports, or nap time, and when children share things like brushes, combs, hats, and headphones.
If head lice are identified at home, please notify your school nurse. If it is observed at school that a student has head lice, the school nurse will notify the student's parent or guardian. Notice will then be provided to parents of elementary students in the affected classroom, maintaining privacy for the initial student.
Students may not be excluded from school for the presence of live lice or nits.

Whenever possible, please administer medications at home. If your child needs to receive medication during school hours, an authorization form, signed by a parent/guardian, must be provided to the campus nurse along with the medication. In accordance with the Nurse Practice Act, our school nurses (RN or LVN) may only administer prescription medications with a Medical Authorization Form signed by both the parent/guardian and a medical provider. Over-the-counter (OTC) medications (such as Ibuprofen, Tylenol, Pepto Bismol, etc.) may be administered if provided by the parent/guardian in the original container and accompanied by the Medical Authorization Form signed by the parent/guardian.
All medication will be kept in the school clinic, except for those with a self-carry authorization on file. Medications must be brought to the clinic by an adult in their original container. Certain emergency rescue medications may be carried by secondary students with proper documentation and authorization by the parent/guardian, medical provider, and campus nurse.
Boerne ISD maintains standing physician orders to treat minor illnesses and injuries at school. It is our priority to promote the health and safety of all students and staff on campus. Supportive measures are also utilized by our nurses to keep students comfortable and at ease during the school day. If you have questions regarding specific medications or supplies used in the school clinic, please contact your campus nurse.
The district maintains emergency medications and equipment on each campus to keep all students, staff, and visitors safe.
